Arriving by car

For travellers coming from Germany, the Rostock-Gedser ferry is a popular route to Denmark and easy and convenient to reach by car. The A19 and A20 motorways take you straight to Rostock Überseehafen; from there, follow the signs to the Scandlines ferry terminal for a stress-free start to your crossing to Gedser.

  1. Approaching by motorway

    Take the A19 motorway (from the direction of Berlin) or the A20 (from the direction of Lübeck/Stralsund) to Rostock. If you are arriving via the A20, switch to the A19 towards Rostock-Überseehafen at the Rostock interchange and follow the signs for the ferry port; allow plenty of buffer time during peak travel periods, as traffic volumes are higher.

  2. Rostock-Überseehafen exit

    On the A19, take the well-signposted Rostock-Überseehafen exit, which leads you directly onto a four-lane feeder road into the port area. Stay on this road and follow the signs for Fährhafen/Gedser (take care not to follow signs for other ferry lines such as Trelleborg), which will guide you to the Scandlines ferry terminal in Rostock Überseehafen.

  3. To the ferry terminal

    Follow the wide access road Am Skandinavienkai straight ahead for about 2.5 km through the port area, until you reach a signposted turn marked Zum Fährterminal. Turn right there and follow this road, which leads you directly to the Scandlines Rostock-Gedser ferry berth.

  4. Check-in and boarding

    Arrive at the terminal at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure, as vehicle check-in closes 15 minutes before departure; follow the signs to the car check-in and have your booking documents ready. After check-in, staff will direct you to the correct waiting lane and then guide you onto the ferry.

Arriving by public transport

The Rostock–Gedser ferry is also easy to reach without a car. First travel by long-distance train (ICE/IC) or regional train to Rostock central station (for example about 2 hours from Berlin, about 2.5 hours from Hamburg). Once there, the S-Bahn line S1 and a connecting bus (line 45) take you directly to Rostock ferry terminal (Überseehafen) in around 40 minutes.

  1. Getting to Rostock central station

    First plan your journey to Rostock central station, which is well connected to the Deutsche Bahn long-distance network. There are regular direct rail services from Berlin (about 2 hours by ICE/IC) and Hamburg (about 2.5 hours). You can also reach Rostock central station comfortably by train or long-distance coach from other regions of Germany.

  2. Continuing by S-Bahn

    For the onward journey within Rostock, buy a ticket from the Warnow transport association (VVW) if needed (single fare). Then board S-Bahn line S1 (towards Warnemünde) at Rostock central station, which runs roughly every 15 minutes during the day. After about 15 minutes you reach "Lütten Klein" station and get off there.

  3. Bus to the ferry terminal

    Leave the Lütten Klein S-Bahn station for the bus stop and board bus line 45 towards "Überseehafen/Fährterminal". This bus runs about every 30 minutes. The ride to Rostock ferry terminal (Überseehafen) takes about 20 minutes and brings you right up to the terminal building.

  4. Arriving at the ferry terminal

    Get off at the "Fährterminal" final stop; this is right by the passenger terminal in Rostock Überseehafen. As a foot passenger, take the free shuttle bus from there (the stop in front of the terminal) to the ship. The shuttle bus departs about 20 minutes before the ferry sails and takes around 3 minutes to bring you to the ferry.
